Download your decision tree

This page explains how to download your decision tree as JSON from the dashboard or editor — self-serve, with no email request or waiting period. Your decision trees remain yours to export at any time.

How to download

You must be signed in as the decision tree owner. Use either location:

  • Dashboard — in the decision tree row, click the download icon in Actions (before Edit).
  • Editor — click Download in the toolbar (top right).

The browser saves a file named like My_Decision_Tree.smeme.json.

What's in the file

The download is your decision tree graph: question nodes, conclusion nodes, edges, conditions, and metadata (title, description, tags, and so on). It also includes basic decision tree identity — ID, title, version number, and created/updated timestamps.

The file uses a small export envelope so import can recognize it:

{
  "smeme_export_version": "2",
  "exported_at": "2026-06-11T23:15:00Z",
  "decision_tree": {
    "id": "...",
    "title": "...",
    "version_number": 1,
    "graph": { "nodes": [...], "edges": [...], "metadata": {...} }
  }
}

What's not included

The download is the editor graph, not a full account backup. It does not include:

  • Your deployed versions (what your AI evaluates against — not the editor file)
  • Session answers, memos, or evaluation history
  • Other decision trees on your account

Connected AI tools evaluate the deployed snapshot in SMEme — not the JSON file on your computer. If you edit the decision tree in the SMEme editor, click Redeploy so your tools pick up the change. Deploy, list, & delete explains Live vs Stale.

Upload decision tree

On the dashboard, under Decision trees, click Import copy and choose that file. Upload decision tree explains what you get.
